New Zealand set a new record of the highest run chase in women’s One-day International history when they defeated South Africa by two wickets at Basin Reserve in Wellington on April 1.

Chasing a big target of 347, they scored 350 runs for eight wickets in 49.4 overs and surpassed the previous record of 339, set by India against Australia in their World Cup semi-final last October.

The main architect of New Zealand’s historic achievement was Amelia Kerr, who smashed an unbeaten knock of 179 runs off 139 balls with 23 fours and one six. It was the second highest score of her ODI career after 232 not out against Ireland in 2018.

The 25-year-old batter guided New Zealand to a series-levelling victory with two balls to spare.

She was ably supported by Izzy Gaze, who made 68 from 48 balls . Both added a crucial 120 runs for the sixth wicket.
